Legend has it that the creation of Republican Rome was triggered by a women.
Back in 509 BC, two sons of Tarquinius Superbus, then King of Roman Kingdom, had a casual bet with their cousin L. Tarquinius Collatius while the three were drinking together. The bet was: which one of their wives was behaving while they were gone. They first went back to the Tarquiniuse' house and found their wives partying with friends. Then they went to Collatius' house and saw that Collarius' beautiful young wife Lucretia was industriously spinning with her maids. Collarius won the bet.
However, One of the two sons of the king, Sextus Tarquinius, was so frustrated that he went back to his cousin's house a few days later when his cousin was not home. He found Lucretia and told her that she either sleep with him or he would kill her and one of her slaves and leave them in the same room. She made a tough decision.
When Collarius got back home the next day, she told him what happened and then killed herself in front of him. Collarius was so outraged that he took her body to the Forum and told the Roman people what happened, holding in his hand the sword with her wife's blood. The Roman people vowed to overthrow the king who at that moment was out of Rome. It was too late when the king Tarquinius Superbus hurried back to Rome, thus began the Roman Repulic: Instead of having a king, they decided to elect two consuls each year, and the Senate controls most of the power including land distribution. 2 497BC Roman Republic won the battle against two neighboring cities Tarquinia and Veii, the Veii threat is over. 3 425BC Roman Republic tried to conquer Veii but failed 4 397-387BC Roman republic finally conquered Veii 5 390BC Roman Republic won the tough battle against the invading Gauls. 6 272BC Roman Republic finally conquered almost the whole Italy. 7 264BC Roman Republic declared war agains Carthage, thus began the first punic war.
