1 What is OBD

OBD is short for On Board Diagnostic's system [obdii]. All automobiles made in the US after 1996 have it as required by US law. Here is a review of OBD II devices: Link. Here is a list of OBD Codes

2 OBDII to USB connector

Besides getting regular OBD readers from auto stores, you could also get an OBD to USB connector, and then use your computer to read/reset OBD codes. FreeDiag and Open diag are two major open source OBD software.
