What is OBD
OBD is short for On Board Diagnostic's system . All automobiles made in the US after 1996 have it as required by US law. Here is a review of OBD II devices: . Here is a list of
OBDII to USB connector
Besides getting regular OBD readers from auto stores, you could also get an OBD to USB connector, and then use your computer to read/reset OBD codes. FreeDiag and Open diag are two major open source OBD software.
Currently, the is the most popular chipset that converts from OBD II ports to USB ports. Crescent USB OBD2/EOBD Multi-Protocol Car Diagnostic Tool Auto Scanner

2 serpentine belt (drivebelt)
This applies to 1998 Mustang, it should work with other cars, but please check your manual to make sure.
2.1 Do you need a new serpentine belt?
The easiest way to identify whether you need a new serpentine belt is to follow the manufacture recommendations.
Manufactures recommend drivebelt be changed every 30k miles. In my case, I didnot change my drivebelt until 50k later when
I noticed cracks on my belt. Having cracks is ok as long as the cracks are vertical like below and are not too deep.
(| are cracks, - means normal)

--|-------|---------

However, you have to change it if the cracks are too deep or are parallel to the belt like below. (+ means cracks, - means normal)

2.2 How to replace the drivebelt
Locate the drivebelt decal:
Most cars have a decal somewhere showing you how the belt goes on to the pulleys. My 98 mustang decal is located on the trunk lid.
Look for the tentioner pulley: In the decal, look for a pulley called tentioner.
Remove the old belt: Use a breaker bar
to lift the tentioner in the direction where the belt loosens. For 98 mustang, you should go anti-clockwise.
Note that the manual could be wrong. My Haynes manual for 98 mustang says that I should go clockwise. I followed the instructions
and the belt didnot loosen a bit even when I almost unscrewed the bolt in the tentioner.
Put on the new belt:
One you lifted the tentioner with your breaker bar, hold it tight while you take off the old belt. Keep the tentioner lifted while you keep
the tentioner lifted. Make sure the belt fits tightly on to the pulleys.

4 How do I change multi-function switch (turn signal switch)
This applies to 98 Ford Mustang.
Disconnect the battery (otherwise your airbag may blow up>): First disconnect the negative, then positive, then wait for two minutes before proceeding any further
Take off the driver side plastic knee cover. There are two 8mm screws at the lower end of this cover. You may need to pull it hard to pull it off.
Take off the metal knee cover. You see the metal cover after you take of the plastic cover. There are two or three screws.
Now the tricky part: the key cylinder. Insert your car key, turn it to run position (do not worry, the power is already disconnected, nothing will happen), then stick a really thin screwdriver into the little whole on the lower side of the wheel cover, and then pull the key cylinder out. Note two things: First, the screw driver has to be very think, like the ones you use for your glasses, about 2 or 3 millimeters in diameter. Second, there are five little hole on the lower wheel cover. Four of them are screws that hold the cover, only the one in the center is the correct hole for unlocking the key cylinder.
Now loosen the four screws on the wheel cover and take off the upper and lower wheel covers.
Now you can see the multifunction switch
Disconnect the power connecters, you may need to push it a little bit hard, but do not destroy the wires
Unscrew the two screws that hold the switch and take the switch out.
If you want, use a multimeter to test the switch. Refer to repair manuals for details.
Reverse this process to install the new one.
