A decision was made many years ago that hiking trails was a bad thing for wildlife, because it causes human impact to concentrate on specific areas. Therefore, there's only a few hiking trails close to the visitor center, and very few others short trails here and there in the park. You have to hike in the wild, and don't expect to see too many "stay on trail" signs in Denali. Keep in mind that you are in a bear country, and bears could be anywhere. Always watch for signs, sounds, tracks, or other indication of bears. Always keep a safe distance: The minimum safe distance from a bear is 50 yards, otherwise he may feel threatened and may behave unexpectedly. Double this distance if a bear is with her cubs. If a bear stands stationary with lateral body orientation, he is usually demonstrating his size and warn you to stay away. However, if a bear is facing you with stationary frontal orientation, he's being extremely aggressive, and this posture may be followed by a charge. When you see a charge, be alarmed, but don't panic. Based on observations, most charged are bluffs and aren't followed by physical contacts. However, also beware that almost all physical contacts are preceded by charges. Get away from them: if somehow you are in a situation where you are very close to a bear, and he's very annoyed Don't try to irritate him more. Don't go any closer and don't challenge him. Especially, don't corner him, make sure he has an escape route Don't run from him either, step back slowly away from him Survive them: if somehow you can't get away from a bear, and physical contact becomes unavoidable Bear spray: make sure you use it correctly. If you use it the wrong way, you may disable yourself instead of the bear Last resort: If a black bear starts to attck you, fight back immediately. If it's a grizzly, play dead first and fight back when it starts to eat you. To play dead, lie on the ground face down, use both your hands to protect your neck, and stay put.
